In the center of Ortigia, an artist’s atelier and bistrot that offers the best of wonderful Sicily: from artisanal fashion products, to its wines, up to traditional recipes, for a convivial place where you can feel at home at any time of the day.
When you enter its small courtyard from the central Via Roma, Chiodo appears like an atelier of wonders where design, food and wine and “made in Sicily” craftsmanship are the protagonists.
Restaurant and cocktail bar, born in 2015 initially as an atelier of the artisan artists Alessia Genovese and Alessandra Di Grande, owner of the brand Ferrodolce, and then transformed in 2019 into a “showroom with kitchen” with the dream of creating a space multi-function aimed at hosting excellent Sicilian realities.
We wanted to create a “home” of Sicilian artisan excellence, a stage where we could give space to artists of every art form, from gastronomy to design.
(Alessia Genovese and Alessandra Di Grande, founders)
The name “chiodo” (nail in English) refers, in fact, to the object, as “it holds things together”, that is a common starting point of the creations of both Alessandra and Alessia who designed all the original furnishings e decorations of the restaurant with their own hands.
Their creations, like the other brands chosen to be hosted in the showroom, are united by the use of natural materials and the reuse of commonly used artifacts. In particular, Alessia, a wood artist and cabinetmaker, took care of all the furnishings, while Alessandra took care of the leather and sacred art objects, as well as some of the fashion accessories, such as bags, on sale in the place.
The atmosphere of Chiodo, in fact, is what one could breathe in the home of a Sicilian artist who ranges across time and fashions, decorated with vintage pieces from artisan workshops, doilies, sacred icons and “family” objects, such as the beautiful wall piano, and displays that hide small treasures.
The cuisine offered, which often changes according to seasonality, is “rich in character as only a mother or grandmother can do”, with traditional recipes revisited in a modern key such as the Chiodo cutlet, the spaghettone with prawns and cream of Avola almonds and the prawn tartare with cauliflower mayonnaise and marinated daikon, with an excellent selection of “proposals from the vegetable garden”.
The drink list is mainly made up of natural wines from the area and from the main wine-growing regions of Italy and beyond the Alps, a nice opportunity to discover small artisanal labels that can also be purchased.
Chiodo is perfect for a lunch, an aperitif or a dinner, in the summer in the magical dehors, surrounded by so much beauty and culture, perhaps returning home with a piece of fine craftsmanship that will embellish your life forever.
