In Palermo, in the heart of its lively Mercato del Capo, Le Angeliche is a comfort bistro open from breakfast to dinner where its 4 “angels” pamper guests with tasty traditional dishes and handcrafted objects that make you dream.
Angelica is the main female figure of the French chivalric poem and of the stories staged for centuries inside the traditional Teatro dei Pupi. A female heroine, therefore, as our grandmas were and as the four Sicilian women who founded Le Angeliche are today: Veronica, Floriana, Chiara and Barbara.
Each with transversal yet complementary experiences, from cooking to communication up to art, who have created “their” corner of rediscovered “gastronomic happiness” inside the Mercato del Capo in Palermo.
The cuisine of a society is the language in which it unconsciously translates its structure.
The Market itself, one of the most famous in Palermo of Arab origin that maintains, in fact, the appearance of an oriental souk, is for them a source of daily inspiration among brightly colored curtains and umbrellas, flying stalls and marble counters illuminated by hanging lamps, votive images of protection, and original altars decorated with candles and flowers.
A lively and “crafty” mood that is also found inside the bistro: the furnishings were made by local carpenters, blacksmiths and artisans, the cuisine is artisanal, as are the objects on display. Nothing is a mere decoration, but helps to illustrate the philosophy of the place, including the wallpaper, designed by a designer starting from plants used in the kitchen and belonging mostly to the Mediterranean Maquis.
Some of these plants were also chosen to decorate the small garden at the back, a peaceful corner hidden inside a typical Palermo courtyard that lights up with a thousand very characteristic lights in the summer.
In the kitchen, Le Angeliche offers simple dishes of the past, starting from products purchased right at the Mercato del Capo and other predominantly Sicilian ingredients, with particular attention to natural and organic crops and recipes that tell the story of the mix of different cultures that have marked the history of the city, especially the Arab one.
The menu includes many homemade cakes for breakfast, appetizers to share such as the Trio of sfincionelli delle monache di San Vito or the Platter of Sicilian cured meats and cheeses, or first and second courses for more structured lunches and dinners such as Pasta with broccoli “scumminato” or Artisanal Spaghettone with red ragù of fish of the day with siccagno tomato sauce, almond mint pesto and crunchy breadcrumbs and the semi-whole wheat couscous “incocciato” by hand with Trapani pesto of tomatoes, basil and almonds and served with fried fish and vegetable and almond broth.
In addition to many delicious vegan and vegetarian dishes such as the Sliced red pumpkin with fondue of soft Belmontese cheese, toasted walnuts and vegetable stock and the Raw courgette carpaccio, marinated with ginger and lemon.
Le Angeliche is a refuge to be enjoyed all day, a place dear to the hearts of many Palermitans, to be booked as a cafe in the morning until 12 and then as a restaurant until the evening.
Many events are organized (just follow the social pages of the place to stay updated), including Sunday brunch served from 10 to 12.
A corner of paradise and one of the most authentic and welcoming places in Palermo.
